Did You Know?!: Automotive History

Sales and Leasing Consultant, Tim Hoyt, takes a look at some of the milestones in automotive history in this month's edition of "Did You Know?!"

---

Automotive milestones from a Chevrolet "Friends" Magazine...

The long and illustrious history of the automobile has resulted in a great many "firsts" - some have been dutifully recorded and passed down by generations while others have failed the test of time, being forgotten by most soon after they happened, sometimes as quickly as the following day.

Rather than rehash the truly monumental moments, FRIENDS, using information provided by the Automotive Information Council, presents some of the car's not-so-greatest hits. They include:

1. The first woman at the wheel - at least legally - was a Chicago resident. She was the recipient of the first driver's license ever issued to a female, striking an early blow for the women's movement.

2. Detroit has been the focal point of many automotive firsts. One of the least known - the Motor City in 1911 was first to paint center lines on some of its highways.

3. St. Louis has the dubious honor of being the  city where the first car was reported stolen in 1905.

4. The first seat belts were offered on Nash cars in 1950.

5. Running out of gas became less of a problem in 1913 when the first drive-in gas and service station opened in Pittsburgh and sold 30 gallons the first day. But it would still be another nine years before drivers would know if they were running precariously close to empty- the gas gauge didn't start appearing on cars until 1922.

6. The big news out of Chicago in 1895 after a big motor race wasn't the winning entry's speed - a blistering seven and a quarter miles per hour - but the fact that he had actually finished the entire 55-mile course. In the same spirit, seven years later, an overzealous Minneapolis driver tried to set a personal land speed record and was fined $10 for going over 10 miles per hour.

7. The Gulf Oil Company gave away the first road maps in 1913.

8. The first National Automobile Show was held in 1900 in New York's Madison Square Garden. The Big Apple was also the site of the first used-car dealership in 1902.

9. Didja know department - some 290 different makes of automobiles had been produced in 145 cities by the end of 1919...the 100-millionth passenger car built in the U.S. came off the line in December of 1951...almost 90 percent of all American cars sold in 1929 were closed models, whereas 10 years earlier, 90 percent had been open models.

Sales and Leasing Consultant, Tim Hoyt, is excited for the change in seasons for one reason...it's finally warm enough for ice cream!

---

It's that time of year again...ICE CREAM SEASON! There are a lot of good ice cream and custard places around here including Dairy Queen, Culver's, Baskin Robbins and Cold Stone Creamery. In this edition of "Did You Know?!" I wanted to highlight the Dairy Queen Blizzard because 2016 marks 31 years of the iconic treat. Here are just a few of the many flavors I've tried over the years:

  • Butterfinger
  • Kit Kat
  • Oreo
  • Strawberry
  • M&M
  • Reese's Peanut Butter Cup
  • Snickers
  • S'mores
  • Heath
  • Cookie Dough
  • Hawaiian
  • Banana Pudding with Vanilla Wafers
  • German Chocolate
  • French Silk Pie
  • Mint Oreo
  • Turtle Pecan Cluster
  • Banana Cream Pie
  • Birthday Cake
  • Salted Caramel Truffle
  • Banana Split
  • Georgia Mud Fudge
  • Choco Cherry Lovers

I have tried them all and my least favorite was the Peppermint Stick. Did I make you hungry?!

Did You Know...the difference between ice cream and frozen custard is that egg yolks are used to make custard?

Did You Know?!: Words of Wisdom

Sales and Leasing Consultant, Tim Hoyt, is excited to bring you the April edition of "Did You Know?!" This is for all the baseball fans out there...
---

Baseball season is here! This month, I decided to pay tribute to the great Yogi Berra who passed away last year. Throughout his life he was one of the most quotable people around. Many of his sayings, including the misuse of words, became part of our vernacular.

Here are a few well known "Yogisms":

"Thank you for making this day necessary"
Yogi Berra day, 1947

"It's deja vu all over again"
After Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris hit back to back home runs

"We made too many wrong mistakes"
After the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates

"It gets late early out there"
On playing left field at Yankee Stadium in the fall

"Ninety percent of the game is half mental"
Berra claimed to use this phrase often as a coaching tip

"When you come to a fork in the round, take it"
While giving his friend Joe Garagiola directions to his house in New Jersey

"You can observe a lot by watching"
While managing the 1964 Yankees

"Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken"
Message to Johnny Bench after he broke Berra's home run record by a catcher

"Steve McQueen looks good in this movie. He must have made it before he died"
Conversation with his family while watching McQueen's movie, Papillon

"We have a good time together, even when we're not together"
Responding to a question about his wife, Carmen

"The future ain't what it used to be"
Referring to the changing times

"It ain't over till it's over"
While managing the 1973 New York Mets who were far out of first place

"Always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't go to yours"
During a discussion with Mickey Mantle

"I really didn't say everything I said"
When someone asked him about quotes he previously said

Did you know that I have two favorite "Yogisms"?! They are:

"Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore it's too crowded"

-and-

"Surprise me"
When his wife Carmen asked if he would rather be buried in St. Louis or New Jersey

My favorite Yogi Berra commercial is the Aflac one. I encourage you to visit YouTube and check it out- it's really funny!
